Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad travelled to Tehran on Wednesday for a meeting with Speaker of Iran’s Shura Council Ali Larijani to discuss the latest developments in Syria and efforts to combat terrorism.

Larijani affirmed his country’s firm stance in support of Syria’s government and its people in countering terrorism, saying “Iran will spare no effort to support the Syrian government in fighting terrorism and restoring security and stability to Syria.”

The Iranian official hailed the Syrian army for their recent victories against terrorist organizations on a number of fronts.

Mikdad, for his part, reviewed the Syrian army’s advances in fighting terrorism in coordination with Syria’s allies.

The deputy FM stressed that the top priority of the Syrian peoples is completely eliminating terrorism from the country, in order to pave the way for a political process based on respecting the Syrian sovereignty and the right of citizens to decide their future without foreign interference.

“Fighting terrorism entails honest efforts by all and serious work to prevent providing support to terrorists based on the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council,” Mikdad said.

He also thanked Iran and Russia for their support in fighting terrorism, which threatens the security and stability in the region and the world.

Speaking with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohamad Javad Zarif, Mikdad discussed bilateral coordination for combating terrorism and the ongoing political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Mikdad also met with adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Akbar Velayati, who confirmed Iran’s firm position of support for Syria in combating terrorism and safeguarding the return of security and stability.
