Damascus Will Ensure Safety of U.N. Agencies, Staff Inside Syria: Mikdad

Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad said that Syria will ensure the security and safety of United Nations agencies and personnel operating inside the country.

Mikdad's comments came during a meeting on Wednesday with the U.N. Under Secretary-General for Safety and Security Peter Thomas Drennan.

Syria’s efforts to ensure the safety of U.N. agencies and staff are in line with its obligations as a U.N. member state as well as its moral responsibility to protect all individuals on Syrian territory, Mikdad said.

For his part, Drennan voiced appreciation for the Syrian government’s efforts to guarantee the security and safety of U.N. personnel operating in Syria, highlighting the need for continued cooperation to address issues of common concern.
