Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the truce in the city of Aleppo as ‘very fragile’ following a US-Russian deal to include the embattled city in the cessation of hostilities agreement.
“You always want to hope for the better: this is what is desired by the Russian side and, probably, by our American colleagues,” Peskov told reporters on Thursday.
“At the same time, there are such complicated mixtures of terrorist groups in Aleppo that, of course, the situation [with the truce observance] is potentially very fragile,” he added.
In turn, the head of the Russian parliament’s defense committee Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov said the agreement to include the city of Aleppo in the truce proves the fruitful cooperation between Russia and US regarding crisis resolution in Syria.
He added that dialogue is already under way between the Washington and Moscow, explaining that the truce will be beneficial to all parties in order to reach a peaceful settlement in Syria.
On Wednesday, the General Command of the Syrian army announced that a truce will be applied in Aleppo for 48 hours as of 1:00 am on Thursday, May 5.
