Syrian Refugee Beaten by Hezbollah Supporters

Syrian and Lebanese activists have expressed outrage on social media after disturbing photos posted online showing supporters of Lebanese Hezbollah militia beating a Syrian refugee in the southern district of Beirut went viral.

The young refugee man was beaten by 12 people near the Airport Road in the southern, predominantly Shiite, Beirut neighborhood of Dahiya, in response to photographs purportedly showing a second soldier beheaded by the radical Islamic State group (IS).

Lebanese media activists denounced a number of discriminatory acts that have taken place in Lebanon in recent weeks.

Activists reported high rates of violence against Syrian refugees in Lebanon that have gained momentum since the battles erupted between Islamist jihadists and the Lebanese Army in August near the border town of Arsal, in the Bekaa valley. Some 28 soldiers and policemen were taken hostage by IS and the Nusra Front.

The involvement of Hezbollah, Bashar al-Assad’s staunch ally, in the conflict has contributed to escalating tensions against 1.5 million Syrian refugees that arrived in Lebanon since the Syrian crisis erupted in March 2011.
