A football championship, named after the martyr Mahmud Jawabra, opened on November 2 in the Turkish border city of Killis.
The championship is organized by the Free General Commission for Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Next Day organization in honor of Jawabra, the first martyr of the Syrian revolution.
The championship, which will continue until the second of next month, consists of eight teams divided into two groups. The first group includes Al-Ameed, An-Nahda, Al-Mahabba and Al-Itihad, while the second group consists of Al-Jihad, Ah-Shabab, An-Najmah and Al-Ahli. These teams will play each other in the first round of the league. Two teams will qualify from each group, and these will play the knockout round to reach the final.
Speaking to Siraj Press, referee Anas Hussein, who supervises the tournament, said this is the ninth championship the Free General Commission for Youth and Sports organized in Turkey, but it is the first to receive support and funding.
"In the previous eight tournaments, we paid the costs form our own pockets, while in this tournament, the Next Day organization has funded all the tournament expenses; booking the courts, providing material and in-kind awards, in addition to providing clothes and equipment to the teams," Hussein said.
The championship saw significant attendance by Syrians and Turks alike.
