Syria, Iran and Iraq Discuss Linking Countries by Rail

Syria discussed with Iran and Iraq means of enhancing mutual cooperation in the domain of a railway linking the countries and increasing transit and the exports and imports between them.

The discussion came during a tripartite meeting held in Tehran on Wednesday, between the Director-General of the General Establishment of Syrian Railways, Najib al-Fares, and his Iranian counterpart Saeid Rasouli and Iraqi counterpart Taleb Jawad Kazem.

During the meeting, Rasouli declared that the project to link Imam Khomeini Port on the Iranian side of the Gulf with Lattakia port on the Mediterranean Sea was on the table during the meeting.

He indicated that the project of linking the Iranian city of Shalamja with the Iraqi city of Basra will start in about three months and it will be carried out and financed by Iran.

For his part, Fares hailed the project, indicating that Syria realizes the importance of linking the three countries by rail, as it would invigorate trade relations between them.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Khairullah Khademi, who attended the tripartite meeting, called for accelerating the implementation of the plan to link the cities of Shalamja and Basra, whose agreement was signed during the visit of the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Iraq in March 2019.
