Lama Ahmed Iskander is the daughter of the former long-serving Information Minister

Syrian Alawite diplomat, Lama Ahmed Iskander has announced her defection from her position at the Foreign Ministry in Damascus.

Iskander is the daughter of former Information Minister Ahmed Iskander, who was a member of local Baath Party leadership for ten years until his death in 1983.

Iskander wrote a letter announcing her defection from what she called the "mafia regime" in Syria.

Iskander served as deputy consul at the General Consulate of the Syrian Arab Republic in Dubai between 2005 and 2010. Following her return to Syria she worked in several administrations, including the foreign media office, managing the office of Bushra Kanfani.
