A Russian aid aircraft carrying various medical supplies landed at the al-Basel International Airport in the northern coastal city of Latakia on Sunday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin directed the Russian Health Ministry to send medical aid to Syria, according to the Kremlin's press secretary Dmitry Piskov, the state news agency SANA reported.
In a statement, Piskov announced that Putin, following a phonecall with President Bashar Assad last Thursday, has taken a decision to send medical assistance to Syria "in light of the difficult health situation" in the country.
He said the medical aid would include medicines and medical materials as well as equipment for urgent relief services, noting that necessary directions in this regard were given to the Russian Health Ministry.
