Muallem to De Mistura: All Counterterrorism Efforts Should Be Coordinated with Syrian Government

Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Sunday received United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura in the capital, Damascus, where the UN diplomat presented a detailed review of the recent meetings held in Vienna between regional and global powers last week.

Speaking to De Mistura, Muallem expressed amazement that the resulting Vienna statement did not oblige countries known for their support of terrorism to implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions on counterterrorism in order to ensure effective security measures and a lasting ceasefire.

The FM stressed Syria would continue to combat terrorism despite the flawed agreement, highlighting the importance of Russia’s cooperation with the Syrian regime, along with Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah forces.

Muallem affirmed that each effort to combat terrorism that is not achieved in coordination with the Syrian government deviates from the goals of counterterrorism and violates the objectives of the UN Charter and its principles.
