Assad to Velayati: Western, Regional States Still Backing Terrorists Despite Ceasefire Efforts

Several Western and regional states are continuing to secretly support terrorist organizations despite international efforts to secure a ceasefire deal and a political solution in Syria, President Bashar al-Assad stressed.

Assad’s remarks came during a meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's top adviser on international affairs, Ali Akbar Velayati, on Saturday.

The Syrian president said that Iran’s stance during Syria’s war has consolidated the close relationship between the two countries for more than three decades.

The two sides also discussed strategic ties between Syria and Iran and the importance of continued coordination in different spheres, including counterterrorism, with Velayati adding that the Iranian leadership and people will continue to remain by Syria’s side.

Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halki also met with Velayati to discuss boosting trade and medical cooperation between the two countries with the aim of providing the requirements of the steadfastness of the Syrian people in the face of the unjust economic siege imposed on them.
