Deaths and injuries in the dozens in explosion of opposition forces bus on border with Turkey

Dozens of Syrian opposition fighters were killed and wounded this evening when a bus that was traveling near the Atmeh border crossing with Turkey in Idlib province exploded.

There were a number of stories about the reasons for the blast. Media activists said that it was caused by “a person blowing himself up overnight amid a group of fighters inside the bus they were traveling in, killing and wounding a large number.”

Other explanations spoke of the presence of an explosive device placed inside the bus that exploded while there were fighters inside. No group had claimed responsibility for the blast at the time of this report’s preparation.

Mohamed Abdel Bassat, who works at the Bab al-Hawa border hospital, told Alsouria Net that there were “dozens of wounded inside the hospital, including a large number in critical condition.” He added that, “We have recorded more than 15 casualties in the Bab al-Hawa hospital.”

Abdel Bassat said that until now, the final toll of injuries and casualties had not been determined, since they were distributed throughout a number of hospitals and border health centers.
