Jordan’s Denial of Entry Forces Syrians to Make a Dangerous Return

Over the last two weeks of fighting, 60,000 displaced people gathered at the Jordanian border reports Alsouria Net

Anders Pedersen, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Jordan, said on Sunday that nearly all displaced Syrians at the Nasib Border Crossing had left the Jordanian border to return to Syria’s interior.

This comes after the forcible return of tens of thousands of displaced people after a deal was reached between Syrian opposition groups and Bashar al-Assad’s regime with Russian mediation stipulating that rebel groups surrender their arms, the regime returns to the Nasib crossing and for Russian forces to enter into a number of areas of Daraa in the country’s south.

The UN said that because of the attack carried out on southern Syria by Russia and the regime over the last two weeks, at least 320,000 people had been displaced from their homes, including 60,000 who gathered at the border with Jordan. Thousands of others headed to the border of the Israeli occupied Golan Heights.

Over the last two weeks, Jordan has repeatedly refused to open its border to the tens of thousands of displaced people who are fleeing the bombardment of the Assad regime and its allies. These people are leaving under extremely difficult conditions, manifested by their sleeping on the ground. Most are children and the elderly.

Displaced Syrians returning to areas that the Assad regime has taken control of, fear its forces could carry out revenge against Assad’s opponents or arrest them and add them to the tens of thousands of prisoners missing in the regime’s prisons.

In addition, Law No. 10 issued by Assad, which effectively prevents the return of refugees to their country, as the decree allows the homes of refugees to be confiscated if they do not establish their ownership during a limited period of time. This will prevent a large number of them from returning, in addition to the tens of thousands of wanted people, from establishing their ownership out of fear of returning to Syria.
