500 People Arbitrarily Detained During January Alone: War Monitor

The Syrian Network for Human Rights on Sunday said that arbitrary arrests by the Assad regime, terrorist groups and other armed factions is still continuing inside the country.

According to a report issued by the network and published on its website, there were 496 people arrested arbitrarily in January, 389 of which were arrested by the Syrian government. It added that those arrested by the regime last month included 19 children and 41 women.

The report noted that over a hundred more were arrested by the Islamic State (ISIS) group, the Kurdish-led forces and armed rebel groups opposed to the Assad regime without giving further details.

The SNHR said that “the Syrian regime has not given a justification for the reason of the arrests of these people and most of those arrested had not participated in anti-regime activities.”

The report said that the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) had held 42 people, including two children and six women, while ISIS had arrested 32 people, including three children.

The report said that the armed opposition and rebel groups opposed to the Syrian regime had arrested 33 people, including four children, during the month of January.

The group called for the immediate release of women and children, while also calling to include the issue of detainees on the agenda of the coming Geneva talks.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said in statistics about the events of 2017 that the number of those arrested arbitrarily in Syria last year was over 6,500 people, including about 4,500 by the Assad regime.
