Hundreds of Factories Resume Production in Aleppo’s Textile Heart

Industrialists witness the return of work in the Kallaseh industrial zone, a former rebel-held area and site of a reported chemical attack in 2016

About 400 factories have returned to production in the Kallaseh industrial zone in the city of Aleppo, according to Luai Sukkar, a member for the Industrial Zone Committee.

Speaking to SANA, Sukkar said that the Kallaseh and Arqoub industrial zones — which host the city’s textile and plastic industries — are the oldest in Aleppo, adding that at least 2,000 factories were in production prior to terrorist groups taking control of the area.

He noted that the committee and the Aleppo Chamber of Industry have been keen resume operations in the factories in the Kallaseh area following help from the local council to remove debris, open the roads and ensure security for the area.

“The supply of electrical power for eight hours daily will contribute to doubling the number of the working facilities, since industrialists are now forced to rely on diesel engines, which increase production costs and weaken the ability to compete,” Sukkar said.

He said that despite this, 400 factories have so far commenced production, adding that the Chamber of Industry intends to conduct training courses for textile workers to fill the shortage of qualified and trained employees.
