Opposition Valuing Foreign Interests Over Those of Syrian Citizens: Lavrov

Russia's top diplomat meets with head of Cairo-backed opposition group in Moscow to discuss ceasefire and upcoming negotiations in Geneva and Astana

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the so-called “Syrian opposition” abroad of looking to fulfill foreign agendas over the interests of the Syrian people.

“Those representatives of the external opposition, who are accustomed to acting only based on ultimatums and preconditions, and who promoted the ideas of their foreign sponsors more than interests of the Syrian people, start gradually losing their influence,” Lavrov said in a meeting with Ahmad al-Jarba, the leader of the Syria’s Tomorrow Movement, in Moscow.

The Russian minister pointed out that despite this Moscow has noticed positive trends in some opposition members toward holding a dialogue with the Syrian government as a way to resolve the crisis.

Lavrov said that launching intra-Syrian dialogue, consolidating the cease-fire and establishing de-escalation zones will allow greater cooperation between the Syrian government and the “opposition,” particularly in combating terrorism.
