Aleppo Officials Move to Boost Security in Wake of Armed Incidents

New security measures will include limiting access of military convoys and requesting fighters to turn in their weapons if staying in the city, loyalist newspaper reports

The military and security committee in Aleppo has responded to the public’s call to provide security and curb the presence of armed incidents in the city after a child was shot to death and a doctor was run over by a car without license plates.

Aleppo Governor Hussein Diab assured Al-Watan the matter had the full attention of political and military leaders, and that security in the city would not be allowed to be harmed. He said that the security committee’s work would reflect positively on the stability of the city, and added that a number of procedures would be applied immediately to address the deficiencies which had allowed some individuals to violate the law.

Diab said this includes orders for checkpoints to prevent the entry of cars without official license plates into the city, as well as those with altered plates, and to detain offenders whatever the reason. This includes the confiscation of cars with tinted windows — except those supplied by the car manufacturer — and motorcycles that do not have an official task.

He indicated that the procedures had focused on preventing random gunfire and eliminating these embarrassing incidents while punishing the perpetrators, with full coordination between every sector of the security branch.

Al-Watan learned that there are military procedures underway aiming to curb armed incidents in Aleppo, including preventing the entry of military convoys to the city, except when necessary during active military operations, and preventing any fighters carrying arms when staying overnight in the city. Fighters will be requested to turn over their arms to the weapons storehouse in their sector before being allowed to stay.

In addition, the entry of anyone in military clothes to the state departments will be prevented if they do not have an official task.

Investigations are still underway to arrest the killer of the child Ahmad Jaweesh, who was shot in the Al-Mokambo district on Sunday, while there are reports that the perpetrator intends to turn himself in to the relevant authorities soon.
