Muallem to Al-Mayadeen TV: US, Western States Supplying Weapons, Training to Terrorists in Syria

Syrian minister says US unable to distinguish Nusra Front from other armed terror groups in Syria because it constitutes the “backbone” of opposition forces

Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said on Sunday that the US and Western states are supplying terrorists in Syrian with weapons and funds and facilitating their influx across the border in huge numbers.

In an interview given to the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV, Muallem clarified that Washington wanted to direct accusations at Russia after its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov succeeded in embarrassing the US for its rejection of the US-Russian ceasefire deal.

Muallem pointed out that the US is unable to distinguish the Nusra Front terrorist organization from other armed groups in Syria because the Al-Qaeda affiliate constitutes the “backbone” of opposition forces, adding that the West has tried to turn public opinion against Russia while at the same time funding, training, and arming terrorists in Syria.

He stressed that recent air strikes by the US-led coalition on Syrian army positions in the Tharda Mountains in Deir-ez-Zor were deliberate and conducted in coordination with the Islamic State group, as ISIS forces quickly rushed to retake control of the area an hour after the attack.

Muallem said that the Syrian army was the only side which was committed to the Russian-US truce, adding that up to 20 so-called “moderate” factions in Aleppo province announced that they would not commit to the deal as armed groups violated the truce a total of 300 times.

He stressed that the US is leading a conspiracy in Syria along with Western and regional states, supplying terrorists with weapons and funds and facilitating their influx with huge numbers across borders, pointing out that the terrorists have not entered northern Syria using parachutes, they crossed the Turkish borders.

The minister asserted that if the US had a genuine will to find a solution to the crisis in Syria, it would have been able to do so, clarifying that it could push its agent states such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey into complying with the solution.

He stressed that statements made by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Syria at the recent UN General Assembly in New York were “shameful,” and that his accusations of the Syrian government using internationally banned weapons are groundless.

“We have been surprised by his statement in which he attacked Syria and accused the Syrian government of using banned weapons without presenting proof other than what one of the terrorists claimed about the army using phosphorus bombs,” the minister said, claiming that the UN secretary-general is seeking to appease the US to guarantee his political future in Korea.
