Regime, Rebels Reach Temporary Truce in Eastern Ghouta

15-day cease fire follows calls for an end to fighting by world powers at recent talks in Vienna

Eastern Ghouta activists said regime forces and opposition factions in the area reached a 15-day trial ceasefire, starting Thursday, November 19.

The truce, which is yet to be announced by rebel factions in Damascus, was confirmed by media activist Yasser Dumani and other activists in Eastern Ghouta, explaining the agreement will be expanded upon at a later time.

According to the truce, all military operations will cease completely for 15 days, and the closed crossings between Eastern Ghouta and the city of Damascus will be reopened under Russian auspices.

The move comes after the recent Vienna conference which suggested initiating an effective cease fire in Syria between Assad's forces and opposition factions.

Eastern Ghouta has suffered from constant siege by government forces for the past three years, resulting in countless deaths.
